Kolkata, 8th September 2026: In a powerful act of compassion during a moment of profound grief, the family of 37-year-old Sourav Pal has chosen to give others a chance at life through organ donation, enabling
Desun Hospital to facilitate its first-ever cadaver organ donation in coordination with the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO).
Following the family’s consent and the completion of the prescribed medical and legal procedures, two kidneys and both eyes (corneas) were found suitable for donation. The organs are being allocated to patients in need, with one kidney going to SSKM Hospital, the other to Ruby General Hospital, and both corneas to Disha Eye Hospital.
Mr. Pal suffered a cerebral stroke with brain haemorrhage on 25th August 2026, resulting in weakness on the left side of his body and speech difficulties. He was initially treated at a nursing home near his residence in Adi Saptagram, Hooghly, before being referred to SSKM Hospital for specialised treatment. Despite medical intervention, his condition continued to deteriorate due to the severity of his brain injury. He was subsequently placed on ventilator support and brought to Desun Hospital on 6th September 2026 for further critical care under
Dr Amitabha Saha, Director, Critical Care & Internal Medicine.
Following standard medical protocols, the Brain Death Committee at Desun Hospital conducted the required assessments and confirmed brain death. With the family’s consent, the hospital immediately initiated the organ donation process in coordination with ROTTO. Medical evaluation subsequently confirmed that the kidneys and corneas were suitable for retrieval and transplantation.
The heart, lungs and liver could not be considered for donation due to their medical condition. Representatives and medical teams from the recipient hospitals are scheduled to arrive at 6:30 PM on 8th September 2026 for the retrieval and collection process.

The donation marks a significant milestone for Desun Hospital, representing the hospital’s first cadaver organ donation and reflecting its growing capabilities in critical care, brain-death identification and coordination of complex organ donation procedures. It also comes as the hospital works towards strengthening its transplant infrastructure and preparing for the operationalisation of its full-scale organ transplant programme.
The process has involved close coordination between Desun Hospital’s critical care,
neurology,
nephrology, transplant and medical administration teams and the concerned organ and tissue transplant authorities.
