Setting a new benchmark in advanced cardiac care, Desun Hospital has successfully performed a first-of-its-kind endovascular repair of long-segment descending thoracic aortic stenosis in Kolkata, reflecting a significant advancement in complex cardiac interventions.
The patient, a 16-year-old girl, presented with refractory hypertension that remained uncontrolled despite multiple high-dose medications. Clinical examination revealed absent pulses in both lower limbs, and further evaluation confirmed Middle Aortic Syndrome with critical long-segment narrowing of the descending thoracic aorta extending into the abdominal aorta, associated with Takayasu arteritis. Following detailed assessment and a multidisciplinary heart-team discussion, the patient was planned for endovascular repair using an aortic stent graft, which resulted in immediate improvement in lower-limb blood flow and gradual stabilization of blood pressure, now controlled with only two medications.
This landmark procedure was achieved through seamless collaboration across specialties. Dr. Soumyajit Ghosh, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon, led the surgical exposure and vascular access, while the endovascular intervention was performed by Dr. Avik Karak, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist and Dr. Biaus Samanta, Consultant Cardiologist, whose expertise played a pivotal role in executing this complex medical breakthrough.
This achievement underscores Desun Hospital’s commitment to innovation, multidisciplinary excellence, and delivering cutting-edge cardiac care.
