A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening emergency where air accumulates in the pleural space (the area between the lung and chest wall) and cannot escape. This trapped air causes a buildup of pressure in the chest, which can collapse the lung, shift the mediastinum (heart and blood vessels) to the opposite side, and lead to severe cardiovascular collapse if not treated immediately.
