Coronary or Balloon Angioplasty (PTCA)
Know About Treatment
An angioplasty is a surgical procedure needed to open the blocked arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. These coronary arteries get blocked due to the accumulation of plaque from increased levels of cholesterol. Doctors often perform this procedure where the blockage has space to be opened.
The procedure is also called a Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) or percutaneous coronary intervention. In many cases, doctors insert a coronary artery stent after an angioplasty. The stent helps keep the blood flowing and prevents the artery from narrowing again.
This procedure, done at DESUN’s Cath lab, entails a dilatation of the narrowed coronary arteries with a balloon or stent, which may sometimes be permanently placed at the site of the blockage or narrowing.
