Heart Attack Survivors Share Stories of Resilience, Highlighting Advances in Robotic Cardiac Surgery

September 21, 2026 Desun Hospital hosts Survivors' Meet with leading cardiac specialists to mark milestones in advanced cardiac care and Robotic CABG

Kolkata, 19th September 2026: Desun Hospital brought together around 10 heart attack survivors and leading cardiac specialists at a special Heart Attack Survivors' Meet, creating a platform to share inspiring stories of survival and recovery while highlighting advances in cardiac treatment and surgery. The event was organised to mark World Heart Health Month, reinforcing the hospital's commitment to cardiac awareness and care.

A key highlight of the interaction was the presence of a patient who had undergone Robotic CABG Surgery, who shared his treatment and recovery journey. The session offered an opportunity to understand the patient's experience while also bringing attention to the evolving role of advanced surgical techniques in cardiac care.

Among those present was a 64-year-old patient from Bihar, Mr Ahmad Kamal, who had been diagnosed with severe three-vessel heart disease, including involvement of the main artery, along with diabetes, hypertension, anaemia and a weakened heart. After initial stabilisation, the patient underwent robotic-assisted minimally invasive bypass surgery, during which two new blood-flow routes were created. Although there were complications during the recovery period, the multidisciplinary team managed them successfully. The patient was breathing independently from the first day after surgery and was clinically stable by Day 9.

Recounting his experience, the patient shared that he had initially experienced mild chest pain around 9 PM, followed by a cough, and on his sister's advice had travelled to Kolkata for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, his family was advised to bring him to Desun Hospital. He noted that since arriving, he had never felt like a patient, praising the care, treatment and service he received. He added that he could barely tell he had undergone an operation, given how little pain he experienced, and expressed that he felt very good and was extremely grateful to the entire team.

The event brought together Dr Sanjib Patra, Director, Cardiology; Dr Avik Karak, Interventional Cardiologist; Dr Biaus Samanta, Interventional Cardiologist; Dr Sudeb Mukherjee, Interventional Cardiologist; Dr Soumyajit Ghosh, CTVS Consultant; and Dr Jhulana Kr Jena, CTVS Consultant, who interacted with survivors and discussed various aspects of heart attack management, recovery and advanced cardiac interventions.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sanjib Patra, Director, Cardiology, Desun Hospital, said, "A heart attack can be a life-changing experience, but timely medical intervention, appropriate treatment and continued follow-up can play an important role in recovery. Bringing survivors together allows us to recognise their journeys while also creating awareness about the importance of understanding cardiac symptoms and seeking medical attention without delay. Advances in interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery, including newer minimally invasive approaches, are further expanding the possibilities of treatment for suitable patients."

The interaction also focused on the importance of awareness, early diagnosis and timely intervention in managing cardiovascular disease. The participating specialists discussed the changing landscape of cardiac treatment and surgery, while heart attack survivors shared their personal experiences of treatment and recovery.
