How Hypertension Impact the Eyes?

  • Hypertension, or high blood pressure, may have adverse effect on eye health. The increased pressure in the blood vessels can lead to several eye problems.
  • Hypertensive Retinopathy: Frequent or continuous high blood pressure trends can cause changes in the retina's blood vessels. Symptoms may include blurred vision or vision loss. In severe cases, it can lead to retinal haemorrhages and swelling of the optic nerve.
  • Choroidopathy: Build-up of fluid in the choroid, the layer of blood vessels supplying the retina, can cause distorted vision and, in some cases, permanent vision loss.
  • Retinal Vein Occlusion: Hypertension can cause blockage of the veins in the retina, causing sudden vision loss. This condition requires immediate medical attention.
  • Efficient management of blood pressure or hypertension as per advice of doctor and getting eye-check-up as per medical advice can help minimize chances of damage.
