Desun Hospital sets a new landmark in India’s healthcare delivery system
Country’s first & only hospital with
rooftop helipad launched in Kolkata
Desun Hospital gains the distinction of becoming India’s first and
only hospital with a rooftop helipad as the first chopper landed on the raised platform on Friday
late morning as part of a trial run.
The Augusta 109 SP helicopter, which took off from Behala Flying Club at around 10:30 AM, made
a smooth touchdown under the able controls of Pilot, Captain Indranil Bhattacharya, with Captain
Sanjeev Sharma acting as Co-Pilot. The rooftop helipad at Desun Hospital, marked as “Latitude
22.30 degrees North and Longitude 88.11 East”, set at an elevation of 52.45 Meters, was ready with
all safety measures, firefighting equipment, and other necessary gear to ensure landing was
uneventful.
Desun Hospital received the final go-ahead from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)
on 14th January 2025, with instructions to undertake the first landing as a trial. DGCA authorized
agency, OSS Air Management Pvt Ltd conducted the flight with DGCA observer on board. Desun
Hospital updated the Airports Authority of India (AAI) about the flight plan and landing for all
necessary coordination as per standard operating procedures.
Mr Sajal Dutta, Chairman & Managing Director, Desun Hospital, said, “This is a proud
moment for all of us at Desun. The rooftop helipad will help us in providing even better healthcare
services in case of emergencies for critically ill patients from across West Bengal, North-East and
other parts of Eastern India. Now that the trial has been successful, we will be able to offer air
ambulance services to those who need critical care support but might not have necessary time to
faster medical intervention.”
Mr Sajal Dutta, Chairman & Managing Director, Desun Hospital, added that DGCA was
consulted from the planning and drawing stage of the Kolkata hospital’s new wing, atop which the
rooftop helipad is located. “Building the helipad has been a matter of precision engineering and
robust construction to ensure that it can serve its purpose. We just want everyone to know that in
moments of life-threatening emergencies, every second counts. Desun is here to ensure swift and
seamless access to quality healthcare.”
