Rapid Intervention & Advanced Cardiac Surgery Save Life at Desun Hospital

Patient Profile & Initial Presentation

A 62-year-old man from Baishnabghata in South Kolkata, known to have hypertension and high cholesterol levels, arrived at Desun Hospital with severe chest pain radiating to his left arm. He was sweating profusely and had difficulty breathing. His ECG showed significant blockage in the left coronary artery, indicating a major heart attack. With every passing minute, heart muscle damage was increasing, making immediate intervention critical. The emergency team activated the rapid-response protocol aligned with global standards and strongly reinforced by the hospital’s JCI accreditation, ensuring uncompromising accuracy and timely intervention.

Diagnosis & Immediate Stabilisation

A bedside echocardiogram showed reduced ejection fraction and early cardiogenic shock. Lab investigations revealed high troponin levels and elevated CK-MB, which typically indicates heart muscle damage, often from myocardial infarction (heart attack). Desun’s Interventional Cardiology team shifted the patient directly to the cath-lab. Coronary angiography revealed a 100% blockage of the left anterior descending artery, the most critical artery of the heart.

The team performed emergency primary angioplasty, inserting a drug-eluting stent to restore blood flow. Despite a successful procedure, the angiogram revealed significant triple-vessel disease requiring further surgical intervention for long-term survival. The patient was stabilised at Desun’s state-of-the-art cardiac ICU, where advanced haemodynamic monitoring allowed precise control of blood pressure, fluids and heart function.

CTVS Evaluation and CABG Procedure

Within 48 hours, the CTVS (Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgery) team evaluated him for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). After cardiac optimisation, he underwent on-pump CABG with triple bypass. Using advanced grafting techniques, surgeons created new pathways for blood to reach the heart muscle, restoring circulation more effectively than stenting alone. The surgery was uneventful, and he was shifted to the JCI-compliant post-operative ICU, where round-the-clock cardiac monitoring, early physiotherapy and infection-controlled protocols ensured smooth recovery.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

By Day 2, the patient was extubated, and by Day 4, he was walking with support, with a personalised cardiac rehabilitation programme helping to strengthen his stamina. Dieticians, physiotherapists, and psychologists worked together to improve his cardiac health and lifestyle habits. By the time of discharge on Day 7, his heart function had significantly improved.

Outcome & Follow-Up

Over the next three months, the patient attended regular check-ups, with repeat echocardiography showing progressive improvement in heart function. Currently, he walks 4 kilometres daily, leads an active life, and adheres to his medication and diet plan. His case stands as a shining example of how Desun Hospital, strengthened by its JCI-accredited systems, advanced cardiac infrastructure, and unified Cardiology-CTVS teamwork, delivers world-class cardiac care that saves lives even in the most time-sensitive emergencies.
