Total Colectomy

Know Your Surgery
A total colectomy is a surgical procedure in which the entire colon (large intestine) is removed. This procedure may be performed for various medical conditions that affect the colon, such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), or severe diverticulitis. When the colon is removed, it is often necessary to create a diversion for waste, such as an ileostomy.
