Subtotal thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the thyroid gland is removed, leaving a portion of it intact. This surgery is typically performed to treat conditions such as thyroid cancer, benign thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, or goitres, where removal of the entire thyroid is not necessary or desirable.
