Porphyrias are a group of rare disorders caused by the buildup of natural chemicals called porphyrins, which are essential for producing heme. Heme is a critical component of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. An enzyme defect in the heme production pathway leads to excessive porphyrins, resulting in the symptoms of porphyria.
