Porphyria
Know Your Treatment
Porphyria refers to a group of rare, inherited disorders caused by deficiencies in enzymes involved in the production of heme, the molecule that carries oxygen in the blood. Heme is a critical component of haemoglobin and other important proteins in the body. The enzyme deficiencies in porphyria lead to an accumulation of porphyrins (precursors to heme) in the body, which can cause various neurological, cutaneous (skin-related), and systemic symptoms depending on the type of porphyria.
