What are kidney stones and how are they treated?

Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form in the kidneys. Symptoms include severe pain (renal colic), blood in the urine, and frequent urination. Treatment options include:
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Pain management
  • Medications to help pass the stone
  • In some cases, surgery or lithotripsy (shockwave treatment to break up the stones).
